Blend for the "Earth Dog" year:

In Chinese/Tibetan culture 2017 was the second year of the fire cycle.  In these past two years, anything that could catch fire, did.  Fire is transformation, and both 2016 and 2017 had been years of such transformation.  But the question remains: how much did we transform?

The world is always changing, without pause or hesitation, but we would be foolish to assume that we have transformed just because reality has changed - especially if we judge it as “bad” or “good”.

As anyone who is familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine knows, in Chinese/Tibetan folklore there are 5 elements which govern all of existence.  Every 2 years, the ruling element changes into the next, constructive element.  This is constructive because the universe is nurturing, always improving and giving us what we need, even if we think we need something else.  Therefore, after two years of fire, 2018 will marshal the first of two earth cycles.

Again, in the Chinese/Tibetan folklore, fire precedes earth which means that fire is the creator of earth.  To the degree we burned in the past two years will determine how much raw material we have to create something new, as earth comes from the ashes of fire in the law of the five elements.

In 2016, the Fire Monkey taught us that evil is real and something we need to reject.  In 2017, the Fire Bird taught us to transform this evil, by purifying it and elevating it into its next higher vibration.

Now in 2018, the Earth Dog wants us to make something from the ashes of the past two fire years, and create something we can commit to.

The Animal Kingdom

Animals are sentient beings.  Less intelligent than humans, yet they can experience suffering - this is the nature of the beast.  For example, they are in constant fear of predators.  As conscious humans on a spiritual path, we can help animals by giving them meaning and purpose.  We do this by accepting the archetypes that they radiate to help us on our path, which intrinsically makes the world a better place.
In other words, when we attain peace of mind, even for a minute, it contributes to the wellness of mankind and world.  It is our responsibility to clean and heal the world by organizing our emotions and mental attitudes. There is nothing we can do in the world that is of greater benefit than handling our own beast within.  With this understood, we can use the animal kingdom as signs and messengers that support us on this path, and in return we bless them for helping us.  It is a beautiful relationship to have with domestic and wild beasts - to use their symbolic meaning to help us tame our own inner animal nature.  For this, within the animal kingdom are a court of 12 animals who hold the cycles of the year in conjunction with the 5 elements of: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

The Ignorant 12

Before the Buddha attained enlightenment he wished to bless all of the animals that helped him on his successful journey.  But only twelve animals heeded the call and went to visit the Buddha in a very particular order.

As a result, the Buddha named each cycle after the order in which the animals came to visit him.  While the bird was the tenth animal, the dog was the eleventh animal to appear in front of the buddha.  Auspiciously, the current western year 2018 reduces to 11.  Which is in perfect harmony with and enhances the power of 11 for this year - which, in the dash® tarotypes system is “Justice”, a quality shared by the dog.

Yin/Yang Circuitry

Where the bird was “yin” energy, which is female, the dog is “yang”, which is male.  We all have yin and yang within us which can be likened to a battery, or an atom which has both a positive (yang) and negative (yin) charge.  We need both yin and yang to create circuitry.  with circuitry, we function with a flow which is uninterrupted, powerful and effective.  too much of either yin or yang creates imbalance and can short circuit our system - leaving us deenergized and in a state of shock, pain or imbalance.

When we are in a yang cycle, our overall energy is descending downward towards earth to help us manifest, with emphasis on the: as above, “so below”.

This fits nicely with the earth element (as we are in an earth year) and the Earth Dog is about the manifestation of Justice.  So we can  already understand that this year is about bringing karmic energy downwards.  Downward facing dog is an asana which will activate this descending, manifestation energy.  However, it should be noted that when manifesting, anything really, we need to adopt an attitude of humility, as being humble means to be down to earth.

The Dog - Survival of the Friendliest.

They say that, “dog is man’s best friend”.  When we look at the origins of the dog species, and understand what they taught the buddha in his quest to enlightenment, we will understand what this saying means.

Every dog that we see, on the street, in the park, in the wild, or in our home comes from the wolf.  Dogs represent the power of evolution and artificial selection.

Our ancestors who lived in the wild had many enemies, one of them being wolves.  Naturally, man was threatened and thereby afraid of wolves.  But soon, man learned that if he gives the wolf a bone, everybody wins.  However, as another saying goes, “it (the animal) is more afraid of you than you are of it”, also applied.  The wolf was terrified to eat the scraps offered by humans.

But over time, the wolves became more tame and less threatening to the humans and they started to take the bone without fear.

This began the process of domesticating the wolves.  Meaning, that the wolves adapted to the likings of man, more and more with every offspring it would pass on the DNA needed for the next generation to survive.  Adorability and cuteness had been major advantages to survival that have been passed down.  So it can be said that primal fear of dogs, is fear of adaptability and evolution (as teach in the moon archetype).

Wolves eventually mutated into what we call dogs.  Aside from eating the scraps, dogs provided security and protection against threats.  What’s of interest is that every dog has a different quality of wolf, and uses these abilities in aid of man.  Now imagine all the breeds of dogs there are and the different parts of wolf they may have taken or left behind to in order to survive, and see how we do that with our own generations.

What’s of more interest is that friendship between dog and man became a major advantage in the evolution of dogs, and at this point, survival was no longer the basis for their mutual relationship.  Even today, dogs can be prescribed as “support animals” to help those with physical handicaps such as blindness, or emotional needs.

Dog spelt backwards is “God”.

The dog represents the conscious mind which barks and yaps in constant state of alert, as displayed in the fool archetype from the golden dawn tarot.  Now, every dog has only one master.  This is true for our conscious mind, in which we need to investigate what or who is our master - our essential self, or some worry for example?  The dog archetype is obedient, but what good is obedience to an unwholesome master?  Being a blind follower will eventually lead us into resentment, so we need to use our “nose” to find the true path.

We encouraged the wolf to evolve into dog according to our ideas through artificial selection, or breeding.  When we reflect upon what we have generally chosen as “positive” qualities of dog, we learn about ourselves: loyal, honest, intelligent and having a “scent for danger”.  From this we understand that these are some qualities we aspire to have.

But like man, no dog is perfect.  Dog needs to be careful to not worry, for just like man, it is it’s downfall.  Aside from that, a dog’s spirit is not easily broken, and we can learn to trust in justice.  We need to be careful in a dog year that we don’t take ourselves too serious, or get caught up in chasing our own tail as we might end up playing games that never end.

Earth (Element)

Earth is the center.  It’s where everything comes together, as it is the melting pot of manifestation.  It rules over the intermediate times between the seasons, when things are changing.

Earth years, however, have a stabilizing and crystallizing effect.  It’s a time when things want to be settled in and set into stone.  This is why we need to commit to our commitments.  If we can manage this, we can receive the blessings of earth which is prosperity, abundance and fertility.

Earth years can also bring up existential fears about the future.  So, we need to balance “what is” with “what we want it to be”.  For this, the flavor of earth is sweet, and its time of day is early afternoon - typically a time of rest.  While sweetness is the flavor this year, we need to have an extra eye on our spleen and pancreas, and watch the sugar intake.

Earth is a very powerful element and we should use it wisely this year.  People born in an earth dog year are resourceful and have strong powers of judgement.  These years also have an impact on agriculture and the fruit of the land.

The Earth Dog

If it isn’t obvious by now, dog and earth are naturally compatible.  The dog teaches us how to adapt into what advances us.  But, does this mean we need to leave a part of ourselves behind?  And if yes, which part are we leaving?  Are we “selling out”?  Or, merely leaving ego behind.

What is useful to us?  What is holding us back from evolution?  The Earth Dog is teaching us that we manifest our karma, good or bad, but we do have the choice which we wish to manifest.  We need to master pessimism, and sniff out dishonesty without ourselves and bark it away.

The dog is essentially a morph.  The earth year emotions are empathy and sympathy.  That means this year, there is a lot of energy available for us to become something else, good or bad.

Translation of “Earth Dog” from the Indo-Tibetan name to English

“Namchang” means “hanging” in english the word hanging has many connotations and meanings.  The word is referenced to lynching which was the killing, usually by hanging, for an alleged offense with or without legal trial.  It also means, relaxing, as in “hanging out”.

We can also use it as reference to what are we “hanging onto”.  The Earth Dog year challenges our attachments to the material, as it can be stronger than usual.  When we are too attached to the material, we lose sight of the spiritual and thereby interrupt our manifestation of “selective karma”.
